Beckett made his grand entrance on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at 5:32 p.m. He weighed a whopping 7 lbs. 5 oz. and was 19.5” long.
I knew early on in my pregnancy that I would be induced at least 2 weeks early, due to my past complications with Addison's pregnancy. My due date, with Beckett, was August 24, right in time for school to start. Dr. Campaign set the date for Sunday, the 11th, but had me come in the Friday before to check my progress. I was told that if there was no sign of progress, I would come in on Saturday to have the "balloon" placed to get my body ready for labor. If you don't know what that is, you probably don't want to google it. That was my mistake... which caused panic at 3 in the morning after looking it up. Luckily, when I went in to the doctor on Friday, I was already dilated 3 cm, so I was given the glorious news that no "balloon" was needed.
Derek and I checked into the hospital at 8 am on Sunday, and the nurse started the pitocin to get the contractions going at 9. Dr. Campaign was wonderful and checked in on me often. She also gave me the best advice, which was to get the epidural ASAP, even though I was not in any pain yet. So, the anesthesiologist made his way to my room about 10am. Mae Mae and Addison came up to keep us company after that.
I was feeling good and very relaxed until about noon, when I started feeling some big contractions in my right leg. I admit I was making Derek call the nurse pretty often to ask some silly questions, so when I told him he needed to call and tell them the epidural was not working, he was reluctant. After some convincing, he called and the nurse paged the anesthesiologist to come down and give me a 2nd epidural. After that, it was smooth sailing. Dr. Campaign checked me about 5 pm and told me I was ready to push. So, with "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" on the TV, I began to push, in between conversations with Derek and Dr. C about must see scary movies. About 30 minutes later, at 5:32 pm our family grew from 3 to 4 and our world was made forever better with our baby boy...Beckett. We decided on his name 10 minutes after he was born, as he was laying on my chest taking in his new world. Our baby name list went from 25 names to 1 pretty quickly, as "Beckett" just seemed to fit our little man. The love I felt in this moment was so incredibly overwhelming that I can’t even describe it.
Right after delivering Beckett, Dr. Campaign told us that he had a knot in his cord. She said that happened to less than 1% of babies, and that meant that he was extremely lucky. That was our exact feeling! We are SO lucky and blessed to have this perfect boy as our son.
I was lucky enough this time to get a photo with my Dr. Who also delivered Addison. She was absolutely wonderful throughout my pregnancy and the delivery.
My mom, Jeff, and Addison came in the room shortly after. I couldn’t wait to have Addie meet her little brother for the first time. It was a moment I’d been looking forward to pretty much my entire pregnancy. Addison was super excited to meet her little brother. She was quite possessive of Beckett and wanted to hold him herself without any help from us. When we put our arms near her, she would get really upset and try to push us away. Baby Beckett was HER baby, not ours, and she really tried to take ownership of him.
We had lots of visitors in the hospital. YaYa, PaPa, Andrea, Allan, Aidan, Maddox, Katie, Cindy, and Matthew all came to welcome our new little man to the world. Addison's possessiveness kicked in every time someone else was holding Beckett. It got to be a little frustrating, and after a few hours of it, we opted to have Mae Mae take her back to our house. (That’s awful, right?) Being in a hospital setting with a sassy four year old and a newborn is not my idea of a fun time.
We stayed in the hospital 2 nights and we're so ready to come home the 3rd day. Mae Mae and Addie greeted us at home. Addison couldn't wait to see her baby brother again.
If you’ve made it this far, you deserve a cookie. I just feel so blessed to have such a wonderful and supportive family and friends who have been with us every step of the way. I couldn’t have asked for a better pregnancy, and a more awesome labor and delivery experience. I’m also grateful that my Mom and Derek have been able to stay home with me for a longer amount of time this time around. I feel truly blessed in so many ways.
